How is a discount calculated?
Price after discount = MRP × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
You save = MRP − Price after discount
Example: a ₹2,000 item at 30% off. You save 2,000 × 30 ÷ 100 = ₹600 and pay ₹1,400.
Why "20% + extra 10%" is not 30%
In an offer like "20% off + extra 10% off", the extra discount applies to the already-reduced price:
- ₹1,000 with 20% off = ₹800
- Extra 10% off ₹800 = ₹80, so you pay ₹720

Tips for shoppers
- MRP already includes all taxes in India, and a shop cannot charge more than the MRP printed on a packaged product.
- "Up to 70% off" means only some items are at 70%; most may have a smaller discount.
- Compare the final price, not the discount. A 40% discount on an inflated MRP can cost more than 20% off elsewhere.
- Check return and exchange rules before buying sale items.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the discount percentage from MRP and sale price?
Discount % = (MRP − Sale price) ÷ MRP × 100. If the MRP is ₹1,500 and you pay ₹1,200, the discount is 300 ÷ 1,500 × 100 = 20%.
How do I find the original price from a discounted price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid ₹1,400 after 30% off, the original price was 1,400 ÷ 0.7 = ₹2,000.
Why doesn't 50% + 50% off make the item free?
The second 50% applies to the price after the first discount. ₹1,000 becomes ₹500, then ₹250, so the total discount is 75%.
Is GST charged before or after the discount?
For retail products the MRP already includes GST. On a business invoice, when the discount is shown on the invoice itself, GST is charged on the price after the discount.
