How to write an amount in words on a cheque
Write the rupees in words, then the paise, and end with "Only" so nothing can be added after it:

Lakh and crore vs million and billion
Indian numbers are grouped as thousand, lakh and crore (1,00,000 and 1,00,00,000). Most other countries group in threes: thousand, million and billion (100,000 and 10,000,000).

Indian cheques, invoices and government forms use lakh and crore. Use the million/billion version for foreign clients or international documents.
Tips for writing cheques
- Start writing right after "Rupees" and leave no gaps between words, so nobody can add a word in front.
- Draw a line after "Only" to fill the rest of the space.
- Write the figures right next to the ₹ sign and end them with "/-" (for example ₹10,50,750/-).
- The words and the figures must match. If they don't, the bank may return the cheque.
- Don't correct or overwrite anything. Under the CTS cheque rules, banks don't accept cheques with changes to the amount or name; write a new cheque instead.

How do I write 1.5 lakh in words?
₹1,50,000 is "Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only". In Hindi it is "रुपये एक लाख पचास हज़ार मात्र" and in Marathi "रुपये एक लाख पन्नास हजार फक्त".
How do I write paise in words?
Write the rupees, then "and", then the paise followed by "Paise Only". ₹450.75 is "Rupees Four Hundred Fifty and Seventy Five Paise Only". Type the amount with a decimal point (450.75) to get this.
Why do we write "Only" at the end?
"Only" marks where the amount ends, so nobody can add words after it and increase the amount. Hindi uses "मात्र" and Marathi uses "फक्त" in the same place.
Can I write the amount in words in Hindi or Marathi on a cheque?
Yes. Banks accept the amount in words in Hindi, Marathi or English, as long as it matches the figures. Use the same language for the name and the amount if you can, so the cheque is easy to read.
